According to the highway police, clearing of the road for traffic will take some time as more landslides are likely to take place in the ghat section. Though this is second time in a month when traffic has been blocked due to landslide in Malshej Ghat, risk of another landslide still looms large. Along with the highway police, a team of Public Works Department (PWD) is also present at the spot assessing the situation before taking the call of reopening the road for traffic. A landslide at Malshej Ghat in the wee hours of Tuesday, stalled vehicular movements on National Highway 222. Thus, the highway has not been made open for traffic movement," the highway police said.

A landslide at Malshej Ghat in the wee hours of Tuesday, stalled vehicular movements on National Highway 222. According to the highway police, clearing of the road for traffic will take some time as more landslides are likely to take place in the ghat section. The landslide took place at around 3 am in the Malshej Ghat, a mountain pass nestled in the lofty hills of the Western Ghats around 100 kilometers from Pune. The ghat is a part of the national highway 222 which is a link between Ahmednagar and Thane. "We received the information about the landslide at around 3 am. A tempo was passing through the spot when the boulders crashed on it. The driver had sustained injuries, but he is out of danger. Another public bus which was just behind the tempo had a near miss when boulders fell in front of it. No damage to the bus was reported," highway police from the Thane region told DNA. Closure of roads following landslides takes place every monsoon at Malsej Ghat, which is a popular monsoon getaway. Being only the two lane thoroughfare, once the boulders hit the highway, they blocks both the lanes leaving no space for the traffic movement. Though this is second time in a month when traffic has been blocked due to landslide in Malshej Ghat, risk of another landslide still looms large. "There are some boulders which are hanging in dangerous condition. They can crash down at any point. Thus, the highway has not been made open for traffic movement," the highway police said. Along with the highway police, a team of Public Works Department (PWD) is also present at the spot assessing the situation before taking the call of reopening the road for traffic.
