Man held for illegal call centres in Goregaon

The police are still looking for Alphanso’s girlfriend and partner, Arti Saxena, and two others who have been identified as Taufik Shaikh and Mohammed Shadab. “Now we are trying to identify those foreign exchange dealers who help them in the racket,” said Desai.The police said there were two call centres located beside each other. The accused would ask the US nationals that they need not pay money and instead they can buy giftcards and hand over the 16 digit password.

MUMBAI: The city crime branch on Saturday arrested the “main” man behind the setting up of an illegal call centre from where the accused used to duped US nationals by calling them up and compelling them to buy anti-virus software.The crime branch of the city police have arrested Bipin Gupta alias Shahu from New Delhi after the other arrested accused in the case spilled the beans on him.Last week, the crime branch had busted two call centres—Infinity and Innovation —at 58 West Building on SV Road in Goregaon and arrested two persons—David Alphanso and Sandeep Yadav. The police are still looking for Alphanso’s girlfriend and partner, Arti Saxena, and two others who have been identified as Taufik Shaikh and Mohammed Shadab. The police had seized 48 laptops and computers and also laid their hands on a long list containing the KYC (Knoy Your Customer) of the US nationals.Sources said Shahu, a former employee of a call centre, has technical knowledge and had helped the two accused set up call centres. Senior inspector Mahesh Desai said that Shahu also helped the accused get their gift cards encashed in Mumbai. “Now we are trying to identify those foreign exchange dealers who help them in the racket,” said Desai.The police said there were two call centres located beside each other. Initially they had started off as one, but due to difference of opinion between those who had set them up, they put up a wooden partition to divide the premises. While Alphanso managed Infinity , the absconding accused ran Innovation. Both have used Shahu’s services to set up the call centres, said the police.The modus operandi of the accused was to employ young recruits who would call up US nationals through VOIP call and inform them that their laptops have been infected with virus and compelled them to buy their anti-virus software. The accused would ask the US nationals that they need not pay money and instead they can buy giftcards and hand over the 16 digit password. Using this password the accused encashed the money in India.with the help of Shahu.
