The victim has been admitted to hospital, and is now stable. According to the Mumbra police, Karan Sahebanna (25) had been harassing the victim, who is his maternal cousin, to marry him for the last three years. The police said that on Sunday evening, the victim, Shivananda Shivantaphule, was lstepping out of her house in Samrat Nagar, Mumbra, when Mr. Sahebanna approached her and once again asked her to marry him. When she refused, he allegedly whipped out a dagger and stabbed her eight times. Ms. Shivantaphule started screaming in pain and fell to the ground bleeding, after which Mr. Sahebanna fled the scene. Her screams attracted the attention of some neighbours, who rushed to see what had happened. “The victim had eight stab wounds on her thighs, back and her cheek. She was rushed to Kalwa Civil Hospital, where she underwent surgery and is now in stable condition,” senior police inspector Kishore Pasalkar, Mumbra police station, said. Ms. Shivantaphule’s parents informed the police, and a team was sent to the hospital to record her statement. The police also made inquiries with the victim’s parents and neighbours, after which they registered a case of attempt to murder and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code against Mr. Sahebanna. “Mr. Sahebanna does not have a criminal record, and the victim or her family had not registered any complaint against him in the past. He is a contract labourer by profession and stays in the same locality as the victim,” Mr. Pasalkar said. The police are now conducting inquiries with friends and family members of the accused, and have sent several teams to locations frequented by the accused in order to trace and apprehend him. The police have also reached out to officers at nearby police stations, asking them to keep an eye out for Mr. Sahebanna. They are also making inquires at spots where contract labourers are picked up for daily wage jobs to check if anyone has seen him, sources said.
