In a major setback that will delay construction of the DN Nagar-Mandale Metro-2B corridor, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has scrapped a contract of Rs 393 crore for construction of five elevated Metro stations. The stations structures are between Chembur and Mandale along with viaducts interconnecting the five stations. The three companies in joint venture shortlisted for construction did not submit their performance guarantee amount. "The amount is around 4 per cent of the total contract cost," said an MMRDA official. The MMRDA has now refloated bids for appointing contractors for the five Metro stations. The delay will stretch by three to four months. Dilip Kawathkar, spokesperson for MMRDA confirmed that the shortlisted companies – GGYHBCL, Neeraj Cement and MPKHS Pvt Ltd, who were appointed for construction of five Metro stations and viaducts at Rs 393 crore have been disqualified. The five Metro stations between Chembur and Mandale for which the contract was scrapped included Diamond Garden Metro station, Shivaji Chowk Metro station, BSNL Metro station followed by Mankhurd and Mandale Metro station. The revised construction bid estimated to be Rs 420 crore has now been floated for appointing contractors. While the overall construction cost along with land acquisition and buying of Metro coaches is around Rs 10,000 crore. The civil construction is self-funded by MMRDA and rest is being funded via loan from Asian Development Bank. The construction of Metro-2B has courted controversy after residents from Bandra, Khar and Juhu challenged the construction of Metro-2B on the ground instead of underground. The Bombay High Court has put a stay put on construction work except that for utilities and conducting soil testing. The demand of Metro-2B to be underground is in view of the narrow width of exiting Link Road and SV Road, which has buildings on both sides. PROJECT WOES
