Five rescued at Girgaum beach during Ganesh idol immersion

Five persons were rescued from drowning during Ganesh idol immersion procession by the Mumbai fire brigade at Girgaum Chowpatty on Monday morning. Hundreds of devotees thronged Girgaum beach this morning to catch a final glimpse of the idol before it is immersed. The five were going in a boat for the immersion of Lalbaugcha Raja when their boat capsized. On Monday morning till 6 a.m., a total of 41,780 Ganesh idols were immersed at various locations in Mumbai. We used the standard protocol wherein one jet-ski and boat were taken right up to the spot on either side.

The procession of Lalbaugcha Raja concluded earlier this morning, almost 20 hours after it started on Sunday. Hundreds of devotees thronged Girgaum beach this morning to catch a final glimpse of the idol before it is immersed. While the idol was being taken into the sea, one of the boats going behind it tilted and overturned around 9.30 a.m.. and the five occupants, Kajal Meyor (31), Avani (5), Anita (16), Adnan Khan (15) and Nilesh Bhoir (18) were drowning. "Our teams have been on Chowpatty 24x7 during Ganesh Festival. We heard the commotion and found out about the boat capsizing. We used the standard protocol wherein one jet-ski and boat were taken right up to the spot on either side. Then, our divers had to rescue each one from under the boat. It took us around two minutes to pull them all out," said S.D. Sawant, head of the fire brigade's flood rescue teams. On Monday morning till 6 a.m., a total of 41,780 Ganesh idols were immersed at various locations in Mumbai.
