BMC demolishes 7 structures in Lower Parel

MUMBAI: The BMC demolished seven illegal structures within Lower Parel 's Raghuvanshi Mill compound on Monday morning. This, officials said, was almost 16,000 sq m in excess of the permitted built-up area. During an inspection of civic records, done over the past five months, officials found that while the original mill area was 24,357 sq m and permitted built-up area 26,486 sq m, records showed there existed 40,337 sq m built-up area on the premises. Civic officials said that the structures were erected without any permissions. "These included commercial offices as well as showrooms of recliners and bathroom fittings and some unauthorised sheds as well.

The total area of structures which are in the process of being demolished are 20,000 sq feet.BMC assistant municipal commissioner of G south ward Devendra Kumar Jain said that as the structures were illegal, notices had been sent to them. However, the concerned parties reached the court owing to which no action could be taken. "These included commercial offices as well as showrooms of recliners and bathroom fittings and some unauthorised sheds as well. Finally, after the stay was lifted, we decided to crack down on them," he said.It may be recollected that following the Kamala Mills fire tragedy in December last year, in which 14 people died, an internal probe committee was set up to probe into illegalities at Raghuvanshi Mills.
