more-in More than 100 procedures were carried out under the newly-launched Ayushman Bharat in Maharashtra in two days, said State officials. The health insurance scheme was launched across the country on Sunday. In Maharashtra, it has been integrated with the existing Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MPJAY). “We carried out a few hundred procedures under the integrated scheme,” said Dr. Sudhakar Shinde, CEO of MPJAY. The State is in process of making cards for the beneficiaries. The scheme was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Ranchi. Also known as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), the scheme will cover 84 lakh families in Maharashtra for over 1,300 procedures and up to ?5 lakh annually per family. According to Dr. Shinde, the MPJAY covers 2.2 crore families for 971 ailments and ?1.5 lakh per year. “The beneficiaries are yellow-and-orange-ration-card holders. In the 14 farmer suicide-affected districts, the scheme also covers white-ration-card holders,” said Dr. Shinde. The two schemes may overlap but screening mechanisms have been put in place, he said. Soon after its launch, PMJAY announced that a newborn girl in Jharkhand became the first beneficiary of the scheme and the expense of her birth, adding up to over ?18,000, was covered by the insurance scheme. Dr. Shinde, however, said details of patients from Maharashtra were not available yet. There was no data on the number of cards distributed in the State either. Doctors said the scheme has seen a hurried launch with very little clarity on its implementation. The existing packages under the scheme were rejected by the Indian Medical Association but the new package rates are yet to be re-worked. The IMA had supported the scheme only after an assurance that package rates would be worked out before the launch, thus leaving the scheme’s on-ground implementation in a grey zone.
