MUMBAI: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority ( MMRDA ) is chalking out plans to improve junctions on Western Express Highway (WEH) to ensure a “signal-free” corridor to ensure smooth movement of traffic.WEH is among the most congested arterial roads and situation has worsened between Andheri-Dahisar as roads have been barricaded for the Metro network.Metropolitan commissioner R A Rajeev said, “We are planning to rework the junctions with a signal-free concept. For example, at junctions, we can have an underpass that will allow smooth movement traffic for north-south and east-west traffic.”MMRDA will also put up signages across WEH and BKC so that motorists know the directions to take well in advance.Kurla resident Prasad V said, “We have to keep relying on Google Maps as signages are missing at crucial spots. This makes the driver to slow down, leading to bunching of traffic. I had been to Goa and I could use the bike to reach my destination without asking anyone for the way. Mumbai should have similar road directions.”MMRDA will also do lane-marking afresh so that traffic movement is smooth. Now, the distance between two lanes is wide enough to accomodate one-and-a-half car space.Even traffic cops have pointed out that laneing is haphazardly marked. For instance, the number of lanes keep changing from two to four or six, thus leading to lane-cutting and bottle necks.
