more-in The Gamdevi police on Sunday night arrested four people for the alleged assault on journalist Herman Gomes in Grant Road on Sunday morning. The police said the attack took place over an argument with the accused, who were drunk. Mr. Gomes, a TV journalist, was with a friend when he was allegedly attacked by the accused. Mr. Gomes sustained injuries to his right eye and needed six stitches. The Gamdevi police said the accused have been identified as Nilesh Khedekar (20), Hemant Choughule (30), Siddhesh Parab (19) and Avinash Aamle (23). The police said that all the four accused are friends and stay in Tardeo and Malabar Hill. The police said the accused were traced with the help of CCTV footage and inquiries among local residents. Pravin Padwal, Additional Commissioner of Police (South region), said, “The accused were waiting for a taxi to take them home when Mr. Gomes and his friend arrived at the spot in a taxi. Mr. Gomes got off the taxi and his friend was continuing the ride to his own house. But the accused tried to get inside the taxi and asked the friend to get off the taxi, which led to a fight.” Mr. Padwal said, “Mr. Gomes was never asked to prove that he was assaulted. There might have been some miscommunication when the duty officers asked Mr. Gomes the reason behind the attack.” Expressing gratitude In a WhatsApp message on Monday, Mr. Gomes said, “A very big thank you to the Mumbai Police for the speedy arrests. A big thank you to all members of the media fraternity for the unconditional support and warmth. I remain indebted. A special word of thanks to the Mumbai Crime Reporters’ Association and the Mumbai Press Club, among others. I am glad there was no other reason apart from a refusal to get off the cab that my friend continued to be in. When he was asked to get off and I came out, the raining of blows began.”
