MUMBAI: The anger over tigress Avni's 'murder' in a Vidarbha forest found an echo in the heart of Mumbai as a group of protesters assembled to "demand justice" for the tigress. Holding placards and black flags, chants of 'Mungantiwar resign' and 'No Cubs, No Vote' rent the air at Shivaji Park in Dadar on Sunday. The tigress, also known as T1, was shot dead by a hunter in Yavatmal on November 2.Dr Sarita Subramaniam of Earth Brigade Foundation who had organised the protest said the venue was changed at the last minute from Worli. "The police told us there could be a law and order situation. Can't citizens hold a peaceful protest? What is the government afraid of?" she asked.Mitul Pradeep, one of the protesters, displayed two of her paintings depicting Avni's killing. "I hope goddess Durga protects Avni's two orphaned cubs since our state has failed to do so," she said.Police personnel present at the spot tried to gently dissuade the group of protesters from touring the park's periphery, but the protesters were in no mood to listen. Advocate Poonam Khanna, legal advisor for Earth Brigade Foundation said, "We want an FIR against Asghar Ali Khan, the hunter who killed Avni. "I'll write to the Prime Minister and Union home minister for an independent judicial probe. Action must be taken within two days or the two cubs will starve to death. That is just what they want," Khanna told TOI. "In fact, our Prime Minister should return the Environment award that has been conferred upon him."Activist Anand Siva said the protest is the start of a people's revolution for stronger animal protection laws.Among the angry protesters was a 4-year-old from Vashi who was accompanied by his mother. "I have come here to save the cubs," prattled the tiny tot, Hrivaan Jindal.
