(Representational) A DAY after a 62-year-old man was found bludgeoned to death in his apartment in Koperkhairane, his son was arrested for the murder. The accused, Nikhil Dahotre (31), allegedly confessed to the crime after leading the police on a wild goose chase, investigators said. Nikhil allegedly suffers from schizophrenia, his family has claimed, the police said. On Monday, while Vijay Dahotre, a retired central government auditor, was found dead at his residence, Nikhil was found seriously injured and rushed to the Vashi civil hospital. Police said Nikhil was called in for questioning after he was discharged from the hospital. “He claimed that two men, reportedly Muslims and wearing skull caps, entered their house and attacked him and his father. However, the security guard had not seen anyone like that. The CCTV footage also showed that no one had entered the flat at the time of the incident,” said Shiwaji Awate, senior Inspector of Koperkhairane police. “He eventually confessed that he wanted his father’s property and thus attacked him with the intention of murder… Nikhil attacked his father with a hammer, pressure cooker, wooden bat and other heavy household items. We have seized all the objects,” he added. Nikhil’s sister has claimed that he was undergoing treatment for schizophrenia, police said. “The neighbours and family members claimed that Nikhil would often fight with his father over financial matters and wanted a huge chunk of the property,” Awate said. On Tuesday, Nikhil was produced before the sessions court, which remanded him to police custody for three days. “We have booked him for murder and assault. We are also investigating the motive behind the crime,” said an officer. For all the latest Mumbai News, download Indian Express App
