The incident came to light on Saturday after the injuries suffered by the three-year-old child was noticed by a staff at a daycare, where the child was enrolled. The complainant, advocate Shashikant Dhanawade, said: “The staff of the babysitting facility saw that the child was crying incessantly and had several bruises on his limbs, back and face. When we approached the police, they first took only a non-cognizable offence report, which was later converted into an FIR.” The child was allegedly beaten by his mother’s friend, who had been identified as Uday Singh. “The child kept identifying him as uncle and was scared looking at him. The child’s father has an overseas job and he lives with his mother in Kamothe,” said a police officer from Kamothe, where an offence has been registered under section 75 (punishment for cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act. “Medical test of the child showed that he was beaten up and has suffered injuries because of it. We have detained Singh,” said a senior officer. Meanwhile, the mother of the child refused to speak to the press, “We will bring her in for questioning. As of now, it is unclear as to why the child was beaten up. We are investigating,” the officer said. The incident serves as a grim reminder of an old case registered by Navi Mumbai police . In 2016, a creche staff was accused of assaulting a months-old baby in Kharghar. In that case, the accused woman had allegedly beaten the baby after trying to put her to sleep. The parents noticing the injuries had approached the police. “Generally parents approach the police with complaints against the babysitters or creche facilities. Here, the caretakers have approached the police against the parents and her friend ,” a senior officer said. For all the latest Mumbai News, download Indian Express App
