Lush green parks will replace the dusty parking lots under three flyovers in South Mumbai. Six spaces under various flyovers will be beautified by the civic body in the next four months at a cost of over Rs 4 crore. With this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will open up 31,000 sqft of green pockets in a city that is starved of open spaces. Out of the six, three areas under the flyovers will be developed into gardens and skating rink, while three others are proposed to have vertical gardens. The three flyovers under which gardens will be developed are at Hindmata, Elphinstone and Dr Annie Beasant Road in Worli and the areas where the vertical gardens have been proposed are below JJ flyover, Byculla bridge near Khada Parsi statue and Dadar West flyover. In addition to the garden, the area below Hindmata flyover will also have a skating rink. After the success of beautification of the area under the Tulpule flyover in Matunga, which has a small garden and jogging track, the BMC planned similar spaces under 29 flyovers across the city. Advertising A civic official said the idea was to develop the above proposed gardens on similar lines, in order to give the area a clean look. “We are also planning to light up these areas using LED bulbs and fencing the area for security reasons,” said the official, adding that if a skating rink was developed, then neighbourhood children would benefit from it. The BMC is expected to spend over Rs 4 crore for the beautification of these spaces, and currently, the tendering process of the work is in the final stages. Once it is completed, it is expected to be sent to the civic standing committee for approval. Recently, the civic body’s standing committee passed a proposal for beautification under the Aanik-Wadala flyover, which included creating a jogging track along the Trimurti Road and construction of a storm water drain in the Meenatai Thackeray Udyan at a cost of over Rs 2 crore.
