Mumbai: ESIC hospital fire toll rises to nine

MUMBAI: The death toll in the ESIC Hospital fire climbed to nine on Wednesday after an 80-year-old woman passed away. The deceased was shifted from ESIC to SevenHills Hospital in Marol with ventilatory support, the family said.Doctors at SevenHills said that she also had cardiac complications and kidney problems. At the Marol hospital, more than five fire victims are in the ICU. Sheela Morvekar was a stroke patient and was already on ventilator at the ESIC Hospital in MIDC since December 2.Her son-in-law Dilip Lad said that she had become paralytic following the stroke.“At ESIC, she was initially treated in the ICU. Morvekar’s body was sent to the Cooper Hospital for an autopsy.

Sheela Morvekar was a stroke patient and was already on ventilator at the ESIC Hospital in MIDC since December 2.Her son-in-law Dilip Lad said that she had become paralytic following the stroke.“At ESIC, she was initially treated in the ICU. As her condition aggravated, she was put on ventilator,” he said. Lad said that Morvekar was a resident of Majaswadi in Jogeshwari and is survived by her 85-year-old husband and daughter.The family said she was admitted on the fourth floor ICU of ESIC and they have learnt that there was not much delay in rescuing her. “We don’t know if she died of her previous health condition or if the fire had a role to play,” he said. The deceased was shifted from ESIC to SevenHills Hospital in Marol with ventilatory support, the family said.Doctors at SevenHills said that she also had cardiac complications and kidney problems. Her condition had started deteriorating in the morning. She was declared dead around 9am. At the Marol hospital, more than five fire victims are in the ICU. Morvekar’s body was sent to the Cooper Hospital for an autopsy.
