Mumbai: Mahalaxmi Racecourse to open its gates for LGBT community

In a first, Turf Club, Mahalaxmi Racecourse opened its gates for the LGBT community. Welcoming the community to the racecourse, Zinia Lawyer, Chairperson, Marketing and Media, RWITC says, the Gulabi Mela is the first LGBT event at the Racecourse. A statement by the organisers of Gulabi Mela stated, “It is monumental for us and the LGBT community to host a celebratory event as large as the Gulabi Mela. In the Pride month, among the series of events that have been planned by various stakeholders of the LGBT community, there are a few firsts. For the first time ever, the Gulabi Mela will also hold a drag race.

This includes hosting the Gulabi Mela on January 27, at the Racecourse. Welcoming the community to the racecourse, Zinia Lawyer, Chairperson, Marketing and Media, RWITC says, the Gulabi Mela is the first LGBT event at the Racecourse. Gulabi Mela will feature pride-themed food, merchandise, and game stalls. The day will be peppered with performances by queer artists. For the first time ever, the Gulabi Mela will also hold a drag race. “Given the 377 verdict, the mela will be buzzing with glee. Those who were hesitant about attending queer-themed events in the past will now be able to participate free of fear and judgement for the first time ever,” said Ashok Row Kavi, Chairperson of The Humsafar Trust. A statement by the organisers of Gulabi Mela stated, “It is monumental for us and the LGBT community to host a celebratory event as large as the Gulabi Mela. Slowly but surely, we are queering the city and making it more inclusive.”
