Child drowns in open drain in Navi Mumbai

NAVI MUMBAI: An 18-month-old boy reportedly drowned in an open drain in Dighe on Saturday morning.Bablu Gupta, the boy's father, had lodged a missing report at Rabale-MIDC police station as the family had feared that someone may have kidnapped the child. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder must be lodged against whosoever is responsible for this," said an RTI activist. "The police must also question the MIDC and NMMC, as to who is responsible for keeping such a drain well open and exposed which led to this tragedy. However, by around 2pm, the minor's body was found in the drain. "We have registered an accidental death with regards to the drowning of Pratik Gupta," said a police official.Some of the locals told journalist that they suspect foul play as to how the child's body could be found nearly 200 feet from his dwelling at Dighe.The locals also indicated the were irked over the presence of drug addicts in the vicinity and wanted the authorities to take action against them.
