  • | Tuesday | 12th February, 2019

Aiming to have direct connectivity between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Wadala, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to extend the under construction BKC-Chunabhatti elevated road till Wadala further from where it starts on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said, "The construction work on BKC-Chunabhatti elevated road will be completed by around June, and will be made open for motorists subsequently. Rajeev further added, "By June this year, the Kalanagar junction flyover will also be ready for the motorists. The two flyovers are crucial for decongesting traffic at Kalanagar junction, which sees thousands of vehicles passing through it. BKC-Chunabhatti flyover needs permissions from Central Railway as it goes over the tracks, and needs a bridge over Mithi River due to which the construction got delayed.

The decision has been taken keeping in mind the fact that the development authority is setting up a commercial hub in Wadala, and also along with it from Wadala motorists travelling to south Mumbai and further Navi Mumbai can travel seamlessly via Eastern Freeway. RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said, "The construction work on BKC-Chunabhatti elevated road will be completed by around June, and will be made open for motorists subsequently. In the second phase, we also have plans to extend it to Wadala." However, currently, the length and exact location in Wadala till where it will be extended has not been finalised. Rajeev further added, "By June this year, the Kalanagar junction flyover will also be ready for the motorists. This flyover will decongest the Kalanagar junction that witnesses thousands of vehicles daily. The 1.6-km-long flyover connecting the junction near Family Court in BKC with BWSL will also have one arm for connecting motorists coming from Dharavi or Sion. Around 2 lakh people commute to BKC every day, and around 20,000 vehicles ply in and out of the commercial hub. The two flyovers are crucial for decongesting traffic at Kalanagar junction, which sees thousands of vehicles passing through it. The junction connects leads to BKC, towards Mahim and Sion, towards BWSL and towards the western suburbs via the Western Express Highway. To ease this bottleneck, several flyovers have been planned that will directly take a commuter to BKC, skipping over Kalanagar. BKC-Chunabhatti flyover needs permissions from Central Railway as it goes over the tracks, and needs a bridge over Mithi River due to which the construction got delayed.
