Mumbai: Girl hangs self on Valentine's Day over boyfriend's death

"The teenager did not leave any suicide note but prima facie it seems she was depressed over being alone on Valentine's Day. When her father returned home at 8.30 pm, he found his daughter hanging from the ceiling fan and alerted police. On looking at the upset mental condition, the girl's sister asked her to go out with her friends on Valentine's day on Thursday so that she could distract herself. The girl spent the day with her friends, who were all in couples except for her. The Parksite police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) after an 18 year-old girl allegedly hanged herself on Thursday in Vikhroli west. The girl was suspected to be depressed over being lonely after her boyfriend had committed suicide two months ago. Depression is said to be the reason behind the extreme step. The deceased girl whose identity has not been revealed by the cops was a first year arts student. She stayed in a chawl near Vitthal Mandir with her father and an elder sister. After her boyfriend committed suicide in December, the girl was called at police station for questioning several times. On looking at the upset mental condition, the girl's sister asked her to go out with her friends on Valentine's day on Thursday so that she could distract herself. The girl spent the day with her friends, who were all in couples except for her. When the girl returned home, she was alone in the house as her sister had gone for work and father was out for a meeting. At around 5 pm on Thursday, she hung herself to death from the ceiling fan in her living room. When her father returned home at 8.30 pm, he found his daughter hanging from the ceiling fan and alerted police. The girl was rushed to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital at 8.45 pm, where she was declared brought dead. "The teenager did not leave any suicide note but prima facie it seems she was depressed over being alone on Valentine's Day. We are questioning the girl's friends and other relevant people in the matter and no suicide note has been recovered. An ADR has been registered and further investigation is underway," said Vilas Jadhav, senior police inspector of Parksite police station.
