Nearly 17 years ago, Nayak Deep Chand Kayyat met with a fatal incident in Operation Parakram, during the Parliamentary attacks in 2001. Kayyat lost his right arm and both the legs when one of the gun shells exploded near him. Today, the war veteran lives his life independently with utmost optimism and acceptance. Hailing from Panchgrami Pabra, Hissar, Haryana, Kayyat began his life as a gunner in 1889 Light Regiment in the Indian Army. He was a part of Operation Vijay Kargil in 1999, Operation Rakshak Srinagar, and Operation Parakram in 2001. After a dialogue between India and Pakistan ceased the standoff in 2001, all was well. Kayyat’s life took another turn when this tragic incident happened. He was admitted in the Artificial Limb Centre, Pune, for three years and completed a computer course in The Queen Mary’s Technical Institute, Pune during the course of his treatment. He says, “I am among the first in the Limb Centre to get prosthetic legs without straps and a belt. The doctors constructed lighter legs for my ease. I can ride my scooter and play football with the help of my prosthetics.” Kayyat often visits soldiers undergoing treatment in the Artificial Limb Centre. “I speak to them and try to make them accept what has happened to them. I tell them not to be scared for what life has put them through. Instead, they should have the courage to overcome difficult situations not only for themselves, but also for their near and dear ones. People visit those who take their disability with positivity and not those who are depressed about it.” Kayyat also mentions that his younger son is his hero. “I remember when he was two years old he asked me by putting up his arms, to put him on the kitchen slab so that he could fetch biscuits himself. I thought that if a little boy, who could not even speak well, can do things for himself, then why can’t I?” Kayyat further said.
