Blaze in SoBo bldg, close shave for bizman’s family

MUMBAI: A businessman and his family had a narrow escape after a major fire broke out in their nine-storey residential building off Bhulabhai Desai Road in south Mumbai early Wednesday.The businessman, Harish Kumar Jajodia, and his family members were on different floors of the building when the fire started on a lower floor a little after midnight.The building's fire-fighting system was non-functional and the BMC is inquiring about its occupation certificate (OC) and other details. A fireman sustained minor injuries during fire-fighting operations.Chief fire officer P S Rahangdale said, "The building's fire-fighting system was not working and we had to ask them to disconnect the water and power supply. We will initiate action against the owner for violating fire safety rules."The fire is said to have started around 12.30 am on the staircase of the fourth floor and spread to the upper floors. The businessman and his children with their families were in different flats on the upper floors. Security guards and domestic helps noticed the smoke and alerted the Fire Brigade. "They alerted the family too and helped them come out safely before the Fire Brigade arrived," said an eye-witness.Fire officials stated the access road to the building was narrow and they had a tough time sending reinforcements during fire-fighting operations. Firemen had to call a towing vehicle to remove cars parked on the roadside to create space for fire engines at the spot.Since the flames had spread to the entire staircase of the top floor too, their next hurdle was gaining entry to the building. Firemen used the terrace of the adjoining building to douse the flames.Panicking on seeing the huge flames, many residents of the adjoining building also vacated their flats.Fire Brigade officials said they were inquiring into the cause of the fire. The Jajodia family refused to talk about the incident.
