Maharashtra: Cops recover explosive device from ST bus; Raigad on high alert

Authorities have issued an alert in all ST bus depots in Raigad district following the incident. The device was later disposed by bomb disposal squad in Raigad at 4 am on Thursday. Hours after an explosion took place at Kashimira area on the outskirts of the city on Wednesday, an improvised explosive device (IED) was found inside a State Transport (ST) bus on Wednesday night at Apta village, about 15 km from Panvel. The device was later disposed by bomb disposal squad in Raigad at 4 am on Thursday. Following these incidents, the police machinery has stepped up their security apparatus across the state. The device was found in a bag at around 10:15 pm in a state transport bus that was going to Apta from Karjat. "The conductor noticed a cloth bag lying unattended near the driver's seat. On opening the bag he found a bomb-like material with electrical wires in it. Suspecting something fishy, he informed the local police," said an officer from Raigad Police. A police team reached the spot along with officials from the bomb disposal squad and confirmed that the device was a bomb. "An IED having some detonators and electric devices was found in the bus. A case has been registered and the investigation is underway. We have kept our line of investigation open to ascertain whether the explosive was meant for terror activity or was just to create panic," said superintendent of police, Raigad District, Anil Paraskar. "We suspect that ammonium nitrate which is used in urea could be used in the said device along with a locally made detonator. The device has been sent for forensic analysis to ascertain it's exact content. We are scrutinizing CCTV footage of Karjat Bus Depot from 1 pm to 9.30 pm on Wednesday," said another officer. Rasayani Police Station in Raigad has registered a case under section 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of Indian Penal Code and related sections of Indian Explosives Act in the case. Authorities have issued an alert in all ST bus depots in Raigad district following the incident. All the buses are being thoroughly checked before they leave for their destination.
