Palghar Municipal Council polls on Sunday

MUMBAI: The Palghar Municipal Council goes to polls on Sunday with 47,850 voters exercising their franchise.Election observers say the election will be a litmus test for the Shiv Sena- BJP alliance ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Counting will be held on Monday.While the Sena is contesting from 18 seats, the BJP has fielded candidates for eight seats. No seat has been given to the Republican Party of India (RPI). Two seats have been won unopposws by the alliance. The council is currently ruled by the Sena.A number of Sena leaders who were denied ticket are contesting as independents.Discontent is already brewing among BJP workers as the Palghar Lok Sabha constituency seat has been given to the Sena despite the sitting Member of Parliament Rajendra Gavit being from the BJP.As campaigning ended on Friday evening both chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Youth Sena President Aaditya Thackeray jointly campaigned for the candidates.Thackeray told the gathering of a few thousands that this is perhaps the first time that a chief minister is campaigning for the Palghar civic polls.Polling will be held from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.The index finger of the right hand will be inked for the civic polls.
