Mumbai: Baby swallows hairpin, gets new lease of life with endoscopy

An endoscopy was successfully performed at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children wherein the hairpin was removed. After conducting an X-ray, we saw a hairpin stuck at the level of the larynx, which is the voice box. On March 14, Ronit, a resident of Shahapur, was rushed to the hospital after he swallowed the hairpin. Ronit's father, Nilesh said, "We were completely unaware of the fact that our child had swallowed a hairpin. A one-and-a-half-year-old boy Ronit swallowed a 4 cm long tic-tac hairpin while he was playing at home.

An endoscopy was successfully performed at Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital for Children wherein the hairpin was removed. On March 14, Ronit, a resident of Shahapur, was rushed to the hospital after he swallowed the hairpin. A team of doctors performed an endoscopy on the same day of admission. Dr Balagopal Kurup, Paediatric ENT of Wadia Hospitals said, "The hairpin was stuck got stuck in his food pipe which led to severe pain and vomiting of blood due to injury caused. After conducting an X-ray, we saw a hairpin stuck at the level of the larynx, which is the voice box. We did not perform any surgery. The pin was successfully removed with the help of an endoscopy. It took around 15 to 20 minutes to remove the pin. The child was discharged from the hospital within a day." Ronit's father, Nilesh said, "We were completely unaware of the fact that our child had swallowed a hairpin. The doctors diagnosed it accurately and immediately took corrective measures." Dr Balagopal, added, "Parents should choose safe toys for their kids. Children below the age group of 3 to 5 years should be kept away from small items." Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, CEO, Wadia Hospitals, Parel said "Child was in severe pain, hence without wasting time, an endoscopic procedure was planned immediately. It was a very complex procedure as the clip was found to be open. While a part of it was piercing into the oesophagus or the food pipe, the other part was piercing into the voice box, which could have been catastrophic and he may lose his voice."
