A virtual friend who was posing as a reputed cardiologist from London allegedly conned a 23-year-old nurse working with Parsee General Hospital to the tune of Rs 50,000. The accused introduced himself as Kelvin Walkar and after having flattering chats with the victim over social media platforms, he duped her with the help of his accomplice. While registering a complaint against Kelvin, the victim said that she was working as a nurse since October 2018 and four years back, while she was working at Tiruvalla Medical Mission Hospital in Kerala, she met a woman Binamol K. Joseph who claimed to be a resident of London and after some time, the duo became friends. Meanwhile, Kelvin sent a friend request to the victim and he was a mutual friend of Joseph. Kelvin said that he was a cardiologist practicing at Glasgow based hospital and was staying with parents, wife and a daughter. The duo began chatting frequently on social media and on March 11, Kelvin said that he was shopping for his daughter's wedding and wanted to buy some gifts for the victim and send it to Mumbai. "Initially, the victim refused but later she gave her address and Kelvin said that total transportation cost of the parcel was Rs 1.1 lakh. He said that he has paid Rs 64,000 but the remaining amount has to be paid by her. Kelvin said that he had purchased expensive gifts including branded phone, laptop, watch, handbag and necklace and had sent it to the given address," said a police officer from Gamdevi police station. After a few days, the victim deposited her share into the bank account of a person named Rajiv who claimed to be an officer of customs operating from Delhi. When checked about the parcel, Rajiv informed that the baggage had foreign currency counseled in it so she had to pay fine of Rs 1.35 lakh on it. When she refused, Kelvin along with Rajiv started pressurising the victim to pay the money after which she sensed something fishy following which she lodged a police complaint. "We have registered a case under section 34 and 420 of the IPC and a further case of the matter is underway," the officer added.
