Maharashtra: Jalgaon bash-up forces BJP into damage control

CM Devendra Fadnavis' confidante and water resources minister Girish Mahajan getting manhandled and beaten up by BJP members at a rally in Amalner has brought differences within the party to the fore. The party has taken a serious note and has warned that such incidents won't be taken kindly. It has also indicated workers that this can adversely impact BJP's poll prospects in the state and opposition can take undue advantage of such incidents. State education minister Vinod Tawde said that fierce clash of the party workers was undignified. He added that the leadership wants all members to follow discipline. Veteran BJP leader Arun Sathe pitched for a strong and corrective actions so that the discipline in the party is restored. ''Whatever happened in Amalner is quite sad and contrary to what veteran leader LK Advani's has preached of keeping nation first, party second and self last. It is quite an alarming situation and the party leadership has to swing into action to curb such incidents in future,'' he told DNA. The police have registered offence against six persons including the BJP's district unit chief Uday Wagh who was allegedly involved in beating. Wagh was quite angry over his party's decision to withdraw his wife Smita Wagh's candidature replacing it with Unmesh Patil for Jalgaon seat. Wagh and his supporters suspected the BJP's former legislator BS Patil had reportedly campaigned against Smita Wagh and ensured that she would get the ticket from the Jalgaon seat. BJP spokesperson Kanta Nalawade suggested that party leaders should take action against those involved in yesterday's incident. "Manhandling of Mahajan and beating of other members was against party's ethos. Party leadership should initiate action,'' she noted.
