Garbage generation reduced, claims BMC

  • | Wednesday | 17th April, 2019

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Solid Waste Management (SWM) department has claimed to have brought down per day garbage generation by around 300 metric tonnes. In December 2018, BMC had directed all 24 assistant commissioners to prepare a monthly plan for waste management in 2019. Further extension was denied to some bulk generators for not submitting concrete plans of waste management at source. "The assistant commissioners can keep all these options open while preparing the plan for the next year's waste management," added the official. "The only solution is to bring down wastegeneration and manage waste at source," said the official.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's Solid Waste Management (SWM) department has claimed to have brought down per day garbage generation by around 300 metric tonnes. As per the department, the city now generates around 6900 MT garbage per day. This figure was 7200 MT in the beginning of the year. In December 2018, BMC had directed all 24 assistant commissioners to prepare a monthly plan for waste management in 2019. "The civic chief had directed the assistant commissioners to submit their plan within a month on how they will reduce garbage generation and manage at source," said an official from the department. Although ward-wise data is not available, overall garbage reduction has been noticed. "In almost all wards, mandatory waste processing at source and segregation was implemented," said the official, adding that it brought substantial result." All assistant commissioners ensured dry and wet waste segregation, issued notices under section 358 of MMC Act to societies and complexes that did not start segregating waste," said the official. Further extension was denied to some bulk generators for not submitting concrete plans of waste management at source. The Mulund dumping ground was closed from October 1. However, it was difficult to manage around 7200 MTgarbage per day with just two grounds at Deonar and Kanjurmarg. "The only solution is to bring down wastegeneration and manage waste at source," said the official. In order to encourage residents to compost waste at their society premises, the civic administration has also directed that the compost generated by bulk waste generators can be used at BMC's own garden, playground, recreational ground within the wards. "The assistant commissioners can keep all these options open while preparing the plan for the next year's waste management," added the official.
