Sources close to the chief minister said that Mehta will be given an extension of six more months. The erstwhile Chief Secretary UPS Madan's retirement was due in September 2019. "Pardeshi is known as a confidante of chief minister. The transfer of two senior bureaucrats has run into a major controversy. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promoted the BMC chief Ajoy Mehta as the state chief secretary while his personal chief secretary and 1985 batch IAS officer Pravin Pardeshi has been promoted as the chief of the BMC.

The transfer of two senior bureaucrats has run into a major controversy. The opposition has raised a suspicion over the timing of the transfers and have alleged malafide intentions behind transfer of 27 officers including the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner and the State Chief Secretary especially in the middle of the model code of conduct. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has promoted the BMC chief Ajoy Mehta as the state chief secretary while his personal chief secretary and 1985 batch IAS officer Pravin Pardeshi has been promoted as the chief of the BMC. Dhanajay Munde, leader of Opposition, of the Legislative council has objected to these transfers in middle of polls and has demanded a probe into them. Munde has alleged that BJP cites the code of conduct for their inability to extend relief to drought affected areas and misuses it's powers to appoint bureaucrats of their choice to coveted positions. Interestingly, the 1984 batch IAS officer Ajoy Mehta's retirement is due in September 30, 2019. Sources close to the chief minister said that Mehta will be given an extension of six more months. Mehta is known as an efficient officer and government needs someone like him ahead of assembly polls scheduled late this year. "Pardeshi is known as a confidante of chief minister. Since his retirement is due in 2021 he needed to be accommodated. If the state poll throws an unexpected result Pardeshi shouldn't face any wrath and hence both these transfers were done in a hushed manner," said a governmental source requesting anonymity. The erstwhile Chief Secretary UPS Madan's retirement was due in September 2019. But the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with the permission of the election commission asked Madan to take voluntary retirement and appointed him as his special advisor (chief secretary rank)to CM while his personal secretary Pravin Pardeshi given the award by appointing him as the BMC chief.
