Corporators across the party lines have opposed the move of BMC administration planning to charge Rs 10,000 fine for parking outside the parking lots in the BMC general body meeting on Monday. The corporators blamed the civic administration for not building enough parking spaces despite giving extra FSI to the builders for the same. Similarly, the decision of hefty fine was taken without consulting the public representatives. Rais Shaikh, group leader of the Samajwadi Party raised a point of order regarding the recent decision of the BMC administration to levy a fine on vehicles which are parked in the 1-km periphery of civic parking lots. The decision was supposed to be implemented from July 7. "BMC administration has taken this decision without informing public representatives. We are answerable to the public and the decision was taken in a haphazard manner cannot yield desired results," said Ravi Raja. Corporators alleged that the BMC administration had kept them out of the loop while taking such an important decision regarding parking. Ravi Raja added, "The civic administration is unable to take over parking lots from the private builders. In my area, a builder had received additional FSI for the four towers he had constructed. The area was supposed to get 1600 new parking spaces. Till date, the corporation hasn't received any parking lots from him." As per the official information from the BMC, there are 146 parking lots across the city with 34,808 parking capacity out of which around 3,000 are for two-wheelers. "There are more than 36 lakh vehicles registered in the city and many vehicles come from the MMR region. If BMC doesn't have enough parking space, how can they levy fine on vehicles?" asked Prabhakar Shinde, a BJP corporator. NCP corporator Rakhi Jadhav said in the absence of enough parking space, motorists are forced to park on the road. "This move by the corporation is not the correct way to curb unauthorised parking," she said.
