Cold war over Maharashtra CM post: Shiv Sena, BJP call it a truce

  • | Tuesday | 25th June, 2019

"Fadnavis and Uddhavji said they and BJP national president Amit Shah would take a decision on who would become the chief minister after the assembly polls. There was no need for any unnecessary decisions and statements," said a senior Shiv Sena MLA. Adding fuel to the fire, Yuva Sena leader Varun Sardesai, who is Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray's cousin, claimed the two parties would share the chief minister's post for two-and-a-half years. However, this has been denied by senior BJP ministers, with water resources and medical education minister Girish Mahajan, a confidante of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, being the latest to stress that the BJP will retain the post. On Sunday, Uddhav warned the BJP that farmers would teach a lesson to those who had burning aspirations of becoming the chief minister.

After intense sniping between senior BJP and Shiv Sena leaders over who would get the chief minister's post after the state assembly polls, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said the alliance between the two parties was intact and a decision on the top post would be taken by the two parties. On Monday, Fadnavis and Thackeray spoke to legislators from the saffron alliance on the sidelines of the ongoing budget session of the state legislature. "Fadnavis and Uddhavji said they and BJP national president Amit Shah would take a decision on who would become the chief minister after the assembly polls. There was no need for any unnecessary decisions and statements," said a senior Shiv Sena MLA. "The joint meeting was meant to send a message against any bickering between the two parties. The idea was to warn legislators against making any public statements or interference in this matter," he added. Fadnavis and Uddhav also stressed that the alliance between the two parties was intact. They warned legislators against being influenced by the results of the Lok Sabha polls, where the saffron alliance swept 41 of 48 seats, and are working to ensure victory in the state assembly elections. After the two parties overcame their estrangement to announce their alliance for the Lok Sabha, Shiv Sena leaders claimed they would be the senior ally and get their nominee as the chief minister after the Assembly polls. However, this was denied by BJP leaders. Speaking at the Shiv Sena's foundation day program last week, Fadnavis played down these demands for the chief minister's post, calling them 'gaun' (irrelevant) and stressed that Sena and BJP cadre must work for an 'unprecedented' victory in the polls. However, Uddhav hinted that the two parties had decided what had to be done after the elections, but hinted they wanted to share power on equal terms. THE TRIO DECIDES
