The association of resident doctors will be writing a letter at the ministry level with regards to the assault incident at BYL Nair Hospital on Sunday, July 14. The doctors' stated that strict actions should be taken against the family members who attack doctors and staff members in the hospital. Dr Kalyani Dongre, president, central wing of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), said, "We will be writing a letter to the government and Chief Minister asking them to look into the matter. Going on a strike is not on our agenda, as it does not help and affects the patients. We want the government to hear our plea and make a strict Central Protection Act for doctors." After the previous instances of assault on doctors at Sir JJ Hospital and Sion Hospital a few years ago, the medical administration had come up with the solution of entry passess, security guards and emergency alarm. In Nair Hospital's cases, while the emergency alarm system helped with security guards, the resident doctors still feel a strict punishment provision was necessary. Dr Dongre informed that CCTV footage will be submitted by security officials by Monday evening to police." According to the resident doctors, the hospital's administration supported the doctors. "There is a lack of training in the security guards. They have a responsibility to protect us. We are now demanding the government to appoint guards with arms, which will help to protect the nuisances." Dr RN Bharmal, dean of the hospital, said, "We have briefed up the security in the hospital. Every alternate day, a general security meeting is arranged. After the incident, a meeting was held with MARD doctors. We won't tolerate an assault incident. After the incident, other medical colleges and hospitals to have been informed to check on the security system in their hospitals." Case File On Sunday, July 14, three resident doctors - Dr Dipali Patil, Dr Gaurav Gunjan, and Dr Moiz Vora, were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient who died in the hospital. The mob also attacked the security guards and damaged hospital property.
