Mumbai: Joyride turns fatal for collegians; one dead, four injured

A 22-year-old collegian died and four other youths were injured after their car rammed into a stationary water tanker on Bandra Reclamation on Friday afternoon. The deceased, Hamjad Indorewala was returning with his friends from a roundabout from Bandra Worli Sea Link to Borivli. While Bandra Police have booked the accused driver, Aarif Mehta (19) for causing death due negligence and rash driving. The deceased, Hamjad Indorewala was returning with his friends from a roundabout from Bandra Worli Sea Link to Borivli. While Bandra Police have booked the accused driver, Aarif Mehta (19) for causing death due negligence and rash driving. Mehta who had allegedly consumed alcohol is yet to be arrested as he was unconscious till Friday evening. Meanwhile, police have sent the blood samples of all the occupants of the car to check for the alcohol content in their body. According to the police, on Friday noon Indorewala, Mehta, Gaurav Jain (18), Murtaza Bhankhurawala (19) and Viral Chavan (19), all collegians and residents of Borivli (W) decided to go for a joyride. Mehta, who owns a Hyundai Verna car (MH-47-A-2431) took the wheels and the group set off for the ride from Borivli to Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) and back. "Around 2.30 pm, their car took a U-turn after crossing over the sea link and reached the Bandra reclamation area. As the car came on the north-bound road of the Bandra Reclamation, Mehta missed the left turn to go on the SV Road and pulled a hand brake the same instant. Due to the sudden application of brakes, their car rammed into a stationary water tanker. While, Mehta and Chavan sustained serious injuries in the accident," said a police officer. Minutes after the accident, youths were rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where Indorewala was declared brought dead. Girish Anavkar, the senior inspector of Bandra police station said that the cops have booked Mehta under relevant sections of the IPC for causing death due to negligence (section 304A), rash driving (section 279) and causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (section 337), along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. "No arrests have been made as Mehta is unconscious. We suspect that Mehta was driving in an inebriated state and have sent the blood samples to the hospital to check the alcohol content in his body. Relevant action will be taken in the case after investiagtion," said Anavkar. Case File Bandra Police have booked the accused driver, Aarif Mehta for causing death due negligence and rash driving.
