On Thursday, a bunch of residents of Motilal Nagar, met the Mhada Mumbai Board chairman, Madhu Chavan. These residents are the one who had stopped officials from carrying out the survey at Motilal Nagar, and had vowed to stop them again unless their demands are met. Mhada aims at redeveloping the 142 acres of prime land at Goregaon and construct 40,000 affordable homes for sale via lottery. Malhari Bhise, president of Motilal Nagar Rahivasi Vikas Sangh who was present at the meeting with Chavan on Thursday said, "At least 80 residents of Motilal Nagar met the chairman, we were expecting a presentation from Mhada on how they aim to redevelop the area and what is that they have to offer for us. However, there was no presentation given to us, but we were asked by the chairman to submit a list of our demands within two to three days and we will do that soon." According to Bhise, their foremost demand is that residents need clarity on the flat area that is being offered to the residents. "We want clarity on the area that Mhada is offering, what we have heard is that we might get 968 sq ft flats, which is very less. Residents want around 1,500 sq ft area," said Bhise. The residents also demanded that Mhada should clarify on the proposal of offering one parking after every two houses. The residents want one parking for every house. Mhada is aiming at the redevelopment for a long time. Chavan said, "We met the residents and informed them whatever the law provides will be done for them, we want to carry out the redevelopment. We asked them to let the survey be carried out as it is important." On Wednesday, the residents of two of the three sectors met to discuss the issues they are facing. Last week also some of the residents had met where they had decided that they will opt for self redevelopment. MHADA PINS HIGH HOPES Mhada has high hopes from Motilal Nagar redevelopment. The housing authority that currently faces a major land crunch issue within the city was expecting that post redevelopment, the housing authority will get thousands of homes which it will be able to sell via lottery at affordable rates. The redevelopment plan has been stuck for years now, off late the Mumbai board of Mhada has been showing a keen interest in the redevelopment because of which even survey has begun. However, some or other issue has been cropping up delaying the project. Motilal Nagar has three different parts in it. The total tenements in this area currently stands at 3,700. It is believed that around 1960’s the then Prime Minister of the country Jawaharlal Nehru visited here and handed over the first key to the resident and named the area as Motilal Nagar, since then this huge parcel of land located in Goregaon West has been called as Motilal Nagar.
