Over three weeks after a three-year-old girl was thrown off the seventh floor of a Colaba building by her father's friend, a two-year-old was hurled from the sixth floor of her Malad building by her step-grandmother. The Kurar police have arrested the 50-year-old accused woman, Rukhsana Ansari, who told the cops that she was fed up of the bickering between the two kids at her home, and so decided to kill her grand-daughter, Jiya. As per police inquiries, relations between Jiya's mother Saniya and Rukhsana, who stay at an SRA building in Malad, were hardly cordial: Rukhsana always favoured her daughter's son over Jiya and would scold the girl over trivial issues, leading to constant arguments. Jiya's mother Saniya said Rukhsana would pinch the girl "to teach her a lesson". "On September 5, a routine fight erupted, after which my in-laws all moved out of the house. Some 20 days later, my husband convinced them to return and requested them not to pick fights," said Saniya. After the reconciliation, on September 27, Jiya caught a fever. Saniya took her to the doctor and Rukhsana made a an ointment for Jiya, which worsened her condition, police said. Jiya was cranky all night. On September 28, around 6.30 am, a first-floor resident saw Jiya lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor. She was rushed to hospital but declared dead. "The autopsy revealed abrasions on Jiya's arms and scratch marks near the mouth, indicating she was smothered before being thrown," said DCP DS Swami (zone 12). After interrogation, Rukhsana confessed to killing Jiya, and was booked for murder. She will be produced in court on Tuesday.
