The sight of men relieving themselves on the roadside between Sion and Mulund on the Eastern Express Highway may not be entirely a case of poor civic sense. This is because there is only one public toilet on the 23-km stretch that sees nearly 20 lakh vehicles a day. The lone toilet – Highway Suvidha – is open for all for urinal and bath facility. There is no toilet on such a long stretch," said one of the bikers after relieving himself on a secluded spot. The sight of men relieving themselves on the roadside between Sion and Mulund on the Eastern Express Highway may not be entirely a case of poor civic sense. In most cases, it is out of compulsion. For the women, the ride on the route is the time to hold. This is because there is only one public toilet on the 23-km stretch that sees nearly 20 lakh vehicles a day. As part of its drive to check the state of toilets on the city's important roads, DNA found a public loo at Ghatkopar along the EEH. This lack of basic necessities goes against the spirit of Swachhata Divas that is being observed today. The lone toilet – Highway Suvidha – is open for all for urinal and bath facility. Features like ATM and WiFi are being set up. This toilet was found to be clean. It's somewhere at the mid-point between Sion and Mulund. Many two-wheeler riders were found peeing on the roadside. "For how long one can control? There is no toilet on such a long stretch," said one of the bikers after relieving himself on a secluded spot. Another biker said, "It takes about 2 hours to reach Mulund from Bandra in the evening. I can't hold pee for that long. Since there are no public toilets on this highway, I urinate on the roadside wherever I find a comfortable place." In comparison, this newspaper had last week found eight public loos between Dahisar and Bandra on the Western Express Highway where about 20 lakh vehicles ply on the stretch every day. However, it was found that many motorists were missing these facilities due to obscure entry points and lack of proper signboards.
