Mumbai: Get ready for thunderstorms this weekend

Mumbaikars reeling under severe heat and humidity for the past few days could get some respite over the weekend as the weatherman has predicted thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday. At the same time, temperatures would continue to be around 33°C to 34°C with high humidity till next week. As per Kapadia, several parts of Mumbai city are likely to witness thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday by late afternoon or evening, which might bring some relief from the heat. Meanwhile, the city's air quality continues to be in the good category as the PM 2.5 levels measured on Thurday were 24 microgram per cubic meter. As per the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Mumbai was recorded as 51, which falls in the good category.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded at Colaba was 32.0°C while the minimum was 25.5°C. Whereas the maximum temperature at Santacruz was 32.4°C and the minimum was 24.5°C. As per IMD officials, the heat being experienced is not the 'October heat' phenomenon, which only sets in by mid-October, when the weather pattern begins showing a shift post the southwest monsoon withdrawal and temperatures see a surge along with humidity. "As per the weather models, the extended monsoon is most likely to withdraw from northwest India by early next week and it is expected that it would withdraw from Mumbai between October 10 and 13," informed Rajesh Kapadia a weather enthusiast and founder of the Vagaries of Weather blog. As per Kapadia, several parts of Mumbai city are likely to witness thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday by late afternoon or evening, which might bring some relief from the heat. However, after Sunday, temperatures for the next few days will continue to remain around 34°C. Meanwhile, the city's air quality continues to be in the good category as the PM 2.5 levels measured on Thurday were 24 microgram per cubic meter. As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the safe limit of PM 2.5 is 60 microgram per cubic meter for 24 hours. As per the System of Air Quality Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of Mumbai was recorded as 51, which falls in the good category.
