Betting in India: Is It Legal?

  • | Saturday | 19th October, 2019

The truth is that this question doesn’t have a simple answer. The rest of the world seems to have moved online while India is way behind. One example of this would be the casino industry. With the popularization of the net, they refurbished classic casino games and made them available of websites and thus the online casinos were born. Moreover, they turned to smartphones and even made apps of popular games to reach a greater audience.

Countries that have online casino platforms levy heavy tax on them and put that money to good use. In India, the situation is a bit confusing. All types of gaming and betting are illegal, but Indians can place their bets online. Their legislation is so much out of touch with the real world that the idea of the internet isn’t present there. So what’s the deal?

Visit Sites for Live Betting Because Sportsbooks Are Illegal

As mentioned before, betting in an establishment on any type of sport is prohibited. There are many sports like cricket and kabaddi that are popular in India. Sure people can watch them, but what happens if they want to place a bet? They’re forced to do this online. For example, if anyone needs to place a bet live they need to visit 10cric.com for live betting, as well as visit Bet365, 22Bet and other sites for placing a live bet. All other types of bets are available online too. If online betting is OK, then why isn’t offline betting?

The act that prohibits betting is from 1867. If anyone would organize an illegal betting they would be arrested and their money confiscated. There are many examples of this type of repercussion and people still do it. They most likely hope that India will make new laws so they can legalize their business. This would be a good solution that both sides could benefit from.

Only one state in India has legalized sports betting. Sikkim is the first Indian state that tries to keep pace with the modern world. If other states would follow Sikkim then they could tax the profits of each sportsbook and then use that money for the benefit of the whole state.

The Indian Lottery

When it comes to the lottery, it fares better than betting. Any lottery than isn’t approved by the state is illegal according to the Central Lotteries Act of 1998. The lotto must be drawn only once a week. However, the Indian Constitution clearly states that the states each state has the right to create its gaming and betting laws so at least 13 states don’t uphold the regulations under the act.

The Bottom Line

All in all, betting, playing the lottery and casino games are punishable by law unless the law says otherwise. Placing bets online isn’t exactly under the law, but it’s not illegal either. So if you’re looking to bet on a future match then you should stay on the safe side and place your bet online.
