Rs 54.75 cr sanctioned from Maharashtra CMRF to pay for migrant workers' travel, says Uddhav Thackeray

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said his government sanctioned Rs 54.75 crore to various districts to pay for the rail tickets of migrant workers who travelled to their respective states by special trains. Lakhs of migrant workers were stranded in different parts of the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced nationwide lockdown from March 25. While Mumbai city got Rs 12.96 crore, Rs 10 crore was given to Mumbai suburbs to pay for the travel of migrant workers. Pune district received Rs 8 crore while Thane and Raigad got Rs 4.8 crore and Rs 2.5 crore respectively. The chief minister said earlier that the state government would pay for travel expenses of migrant workers who wanted to leave as well as those from Maharashtra who are stuck elsewhere.

The lockdown was further extended twice till May 17. The movement of migrant workers via bus and train was allowed earlier this month but a huge controversy emerged after they were forced to shell out the ticket price following which the Centre said it would bear 85% of the cost and states would afford 15%. A total amount of Rs 54,75,47,070 was disbursed among the districts, most to Mumbai city and suburbs. While Mumbai city got Rs 12.96 crore, Rs 10 crore was given to Mumbai suburbs to pay for the travel of migrant workers. Pune district received Rs 8 crore while Thane and Raigad got Rs 4.8 crore and Rs 2.5 crore respectively. The amount was sanctioned from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and transferred to district collectors for booking tickets for migrant workers on special trains, Thackeray said in a statement. The chief minister said earlier that the state government would pay for travel expenses of migrant workers who wanted to leave as well as those from Maharashtra who are stuck elsewhere. Maharashtra is the worst-affected state in the country with 24,427 cases and the death toll of 921.
