Amid a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, three cities in the state are likely to face a stricter lockdown "at any moment". Government has already declared lockdown in Amravati from Saturday 8 pm to Monday 7 am

Restrictions are also being enforced in place in Yavatmal district of the state, though there is no lockdown, District Collector MD Singh said.

"Schools and colleges will remain closed till February 28. Restaurants, function halls to operate and marriage ceremonies to be held with less than 50 per cent capacity of people, assembly of five or more people not allowed," he said.

The state recorded 5,427 new COVID-19 cases, 2,543 discharges, and 38 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per the Maharashtra Health Department. The total cases now stand at 20,81,520, while the number of total recoveries is 19,87,804.

There are 40,858 active cases and the death toll has risen to 51,669.

Earlier today, the Pune Municipal Corporation issued an order making it mandatory for passengers arriving from Kerala to undergo RT-PCR test on arrival.

In view of the recent spurt in cases, Chief Minister Thackeray on Tuesday warned that if COVID-19 norms are not followed, people should be prepared for a fresh round of strict lockdown. The government in January extended the coronavirus- induced lockdown in the state till February 28, even as a lot of restrictions have been eased in the last few months. The government`s guidelines to operationalise `Mission Begin Again` for easing of restrictions and phase-wise opening will remain in force till February 28, it had said.
