Politics over vaccine gains momentum in Mumbai amid acute shortage

Politics over vaccines have intensified in Maharashtra even as the state faces an acute shortage of Covid vaccines.

“What BMC and Shiv Sena couldn’t do, the BJP has managed for you... welcome your leader who’s arranged the vaccines for you,” an announcement was made at a vaccination camp in Mumbai minutes before the BJP leader made a grand entry with his supporters.

The party supporters greeted him with applause. The people at the registration area were then told to keep Rs 1,000 (cost of the vaccine) ready. The leader then inspected the area and headed to make a short speech inside the vaccination centre.

At a time when there is an acute shortage of Covid vaccines, politicians are trying their best to gain the spotlight from private vaccination drives in the city and adjoining towns.

The people’s representatives are either directly tying up with the private hospitals or they are facilitating the tie-ups between hospitals and housing societies. And with BMC elections round the corner the public service drive of the netas is only gaining momentum.

While the central government rules do not allow political parties to tie up with private hospitals directly, these vaccine camps are being registered under an MoU between hospitals and housing societies.

On June 4, BJP leader Atul Bhatkhalkar organized a vaccination camp in the suburban area of Malad in Mumbai. A statement from the leader said the vaccination camp would be organized in his entire constituency, and it aims to vaccinate a thousand people a day.

“The central government is conducting the vaccination drive for the all above 45 years. It is going smoothly. The state government had to vaccinate the 18-45 age group but it has failed... we will be organising a big protest against the state government now,” he said.
