Too many leaders spoil the plot Leaders never miss an opportunity to be close to any major event or incident. More the merrier! In fact, last week the dalits of Balad Kalan village in Sangrur, who have been agitating against social boycott by the upper caste residents of their neighbourhood, were in for a pleasant surprise when two MPs from rival parties came to inquire about their problem. Hoshiarpur MP Vijay Sampla of BJP and Chaudhry Santokh Singh, Congress MP from Jalandhar, reached Balad Kalan together with their respective supporters, which made Balad Kalan residents assume that theirs was a joint visit.

Spicing up the situation, Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa was also there with the two MPs. To dispel notions about their joint visit, Sampla later had to explain that he visited Balad Kalan as a "responsible citizen" while Santokh stated he had nothing to do with BJP.Fear of ouster sends netas into a huddle It is no secret that Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh and state Congress president Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu have a love-hate relationship.

Leaving no chance to attack each other through their statements, both huddle up when it comes to taking up matters before the party high command in New Delhi. Not happy with Sukhu`s decision to seek a written explanation from ministers and MLAs for party`s defeat in parliamentary elections, Virbhadra had openly criticized him saying, "Sukhu has crossed the limits this time." However, when called by the party leaders in Delhi, they joined hands.

On July 4, Sukhu went to the state secretariat, where he held a detailed meeting with Virbhadra and later they flew together to Delhi. A party insider quipped that both leaders know that party high command could take action against them for the humiliating defeat so prefer to put up a united face.Pensive Majithia on meditation mode While everyone is guessing about the whereabouts of firebrand Punjab cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia after the ruling SAD-BJP combine`s listless showing in the Lok Sabha elections, his Akali supporters claim that the leader is meditating.

Issuing a press release, two of Majithia`s followers Manjit Singh Bhoma, chief of a faction of the All India Sikh Students Federation, and Sarabjit Singh Sohal, organizing secretary of the outfit, sang paeans for the minister who is called "Majhe da jarnail". Bhoma and Sohal mentioned in the release that Bikram was deeply religious and missed out on his "nitnem" (daily prayers) due to hectic election campaign, therefore was making up for that by meditating. Terming Majithia as "Babbar Sher" (lion), both youth Sikh leaders said he would be back a la Terminator style!War memorial on the backburner Certain influential leaders in Punjab government are trying to scuttle the war memorial project in Amritsar to keep their vote bank intact among radical Sikhs.

The memorial is being built at Attari near Amritsar that would showcase valour of Punjabi soldiers, who had participated in various wars and counter insurgency operations, including Operation Bluestar. The memorial is being opposed by radical Sikhs and their moderate sympathizers due to another memorial constructed in the memory of those who had fought against the Indian Army during Operation Bluestar in the Golden Temple complex..
