Abduction of martyr`s kin: Former DIG appeals against conviction

The lower court sentenced them after holding them guilty under Section 364 (abduction), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC. Basra retired from the post of DIG last October. According to the victim`s family, Dhatt was allegedly killed by the policemen in July, 1989.

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court, on Wednesday, admitted a petition filed by former Punjab police DIG SPS Basra against his conviction in the case of abduction of martyr Bhagat Singh`s relative Kuljeet Singh Dhatt. Basra, along with two other policemen, retired DSP Jaspal Singh and retired inspector Sita Ram, were sentenced to five years` imprisonment by a Hoshiarpur court on May 9. The lower court sentenced them after holding them guilty under Section 364 (abduction), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

In the appeal filed against these orders, Basra, who is lodged in jail at present, submitted that the trial court erred in holding him guilty. The deceased, Kuljeet Singh Dhatt, was the son-in-law of Bhagat Singh`s sister Parkash Kaur. Dhatt was allegedly killed by five policemen? Ajit Singh Sandhu, SPS Basra, Sardool Singh, Jaspal Singh and Sita Ram.

Basra retired from the post of DIG last October. Two other policemen involved in the incident died during trial. According to the victim`s family, Dhatt was allegedly killed by the policemen in July, 1989.

They later concocted a story about his involvement in a murder case..
