INDORE: An eight-month-old girl abandoned in dense forests on Indore`s outskirts with her mouth tied tightly with a scarf survived heavy rains and wild animals for over 24 hours. She was spotted by woodcutters and milkmen on Wednesday morning. The infant girl wrapped in a shawl was seen in forests near Budhi Tillod village, 2.

5 km from Tincha waterfalls in Khudel area by group of milkmen and woodcutters at about 11 am. They subsequently informed the chilling episode of the girl child lying abandoned to village sarpanch Mahesh Dangi. Later, with the help of locals, 108 ambulance was called to the spot, after which the infant was rushed to MY Hospital.

While villagers claimed that the girl could have been lying abandoned for nearly 40 hours in the forest inhabited by wild bore, leopard, wild cats, hyena and fox, doctors at MY Hospital in Indore said that she must have been lying there for over 24 hours. "The girl, who is aged between seven and eight months is suffering from acute dehydration and multiple infections owing to being exposed to rain for long and not being fed at all for a long time. She is being treated at the paediatric ICU and her condition will stabilize in not less than 48 hours," head of MY Hospital`s paediatrics department Dr Sharad Thora said.

He added that the girl child is also underweight and malnourished. According to additional SP (Indore police headquarters) Rajesh Kumar Singh, a case for exposure and abandonment of child by parent or person having care of, has been registered against unidentified persons. From circumstantial evidence, particularly the infant being gagged with a scarf, it seems she was dumped there to die.
