Most elderly people face shabby treatment from family: Report

JAIPUR: One out of every three elderly persons in the state face mistreatment from their family members. A study conducted by the Agewell foundation, respondents asserted that due to housing and property issues at old age time, they face harassment from the their children. Out of 5,000 elderly respondents interviewed during the survey, 2,829 of them said they faced mistreatment due to housing problems.

A study conducted by the Agewell foundation, respondents asserted that due to housing and property issues at old age time, they face harassment from the their children. Out of 5,000 elderly respondents interviewed during the survey, 2,829 of them said they faced mistreatment due to housing problems.

Even when elderly people are owners of their property, they have to face shabby treatment. Elderly women were found facing comparatively higher cases of harassment from their daughters-in-law due to their house or land property problems. "Elderly respondents accepted that their family members are causing trouble in their life due to the house-related problems.

Harassment for shelter is more prevalent in urban areas in comparison to rural areas," said Himanshu Rath, founder and chairman of Agewell foundation. For the survey, a representative sample comprising 5,000 elderly people (2,700 from rural areas and 2,300 from urban areas) from across 30 districts of the state is interviewed. Among the respondents, 2,400 were elderly men and 2,600 were women.

About 73.3% of the elderly in the state responded that they live with their children. The survey found that in rural areas, most elderly people were living in their own houses when compared to urban areas.

Also 21.39% elderly men and 31.24% elderly women were depending on their family members while 9.

68% elderly men and 18.18% elderly women were reportedly dependent on others. The report also suggested that every fifth elderly was affected due to restrictions in their social life by their family members or others.

According to 568 respondents, restricted social life is ranked the most common form of abuse. More importantly, the survey pointed out that only 29.26% elderly respondents had actual control over their finances.

Only 868 elderly respondents out of 2,969 accepted that they manage their finances as per their choice. "Almost half of the financially self-dependent elderly (48.38%) have no control over their money and their family members have actual control on their financial income," the report noted.

Most respondents claimed that they could not manage their money matters mostly because their family members or relatives don`t let them control their money..
