Family of youth killed in Jamaica seeks PMO's help

As the gunmen were leaving, Rakesh tried to nab them and got hit by three bullets on the chest. Rakesh Talreja (25) worked as a salesperson for Caribbean Jewellers in Kingston since October 2014. The family has now asked the PMO and Swaraj to intervene and provide them details of the case which is being handled by the Constant Spring police.

MUMBAI: The family of the Vasai youth who was shot dead by four unidentified gunmen in his room in Jamaica in an apparent robbery bid on February 9 has sought the help of the Prime Minister's office to get information about the progress in the case. Rakesh Talreja (25) worked as a salesperson for Caribbean Jewellers in Kingston since October 2014. He sustained three bullet injuries on the chest. His cellphone and cash were stolen by the shooters who are still at large.Rakesh's elder brother Mahesh who has returned from South Africa where he works said that there are conflicting reports about how Rakesh was killed. He said that Rakesh's employer Sunil Daswani had called his cousin Chandan Ahuja and informed him about the shootout at around 8.15 am on February 10. "While Dawani told us that Rakesh's cellphone was robbed, it was actually with one of his roommates. We want to know what happened on that night," said Mahesh.Rakesh had returned from work and was in his room on the first floor. Two of his Indian roommates Girish Mehtani and Honey Kalyani were on the ground floor. The gunmen first targeted Mehtani who was fired a bullet round on the leg. After robbing him they went on the first floor where Rakesh was resting. Rakesh is believed to have given in to the demands of the gunmen and handed over his cellphone and cash. As the gunmen were leaving, Rakesh tried to nab them and got hit by three bullets on the chest. His body was lying on the back when the police arrived.Mahesh demanded that Daswani be questioned in the case as he was giving conflicting statements to the family. He said that no police official or officers from the Indian High Commission in Jamaica have contacted them with details about the case.The family alleged that Rakesh had not been paid his salary since 11 months. He earned 500 USD a month. A day before Rakesh's death he had called his family and taken details of his bank account in which Daswani had promised to deposit the money. The family said that they wanted to know if the robbery attempt in the ground plus one storey apartment was pre-plannedAfter Rakesh's death external affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had intervened and helped fly the body to India. The family has now asked the PMO and Swaraj to intervene and provide them details of the case which is being handled by the Constant Spring police.
