Maharashtra CM inaugurates newly restored Asiatic town hall and library

MUMBAI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the newly restored century old Town Hall and Asiatic Society Library on Sunday. The town hall has been totally restored," said Fadnavis. At the function he said that the Asiatic society and it's premise has been the backdrop of many movies, and they will consider allowing shooting in the newly restored town hall and library during the days its shut.The society library is one of the historic locations in the city and has as many as 3 lakh books in more than 7 languages. Some of these books are very old and also manuscripts which are over 200 years old. "The heritage structure required conservation as it was in a dilapidated condition.

The restoration was done by the public works department, with the help of heritage conservationist from the city.The origins of Asiatic society of Mumbai can be traced to the Literary Society of Bombay , which first met in Mumbai on November 26, 1804.The state government is serious about conserving our heritage as it is like protecting and promoting our culture for the youth and future generations, Fadnavis said.The library has been handed over to the higher and technical education department for its functioning.
