more-in Mumbai: Investigations by intelligence agencies into the activities of terror suspect Nazim Ahmed, who was arrested from Mumbra on Thursday show he was attempting to radicalise youths online, sources said on Friday. Nazim was allegedly heading a terrorist module in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh and had been in Mumbra for a year. “An examination of Ahmed’s cell phone has established that besides his handlers based in a foreign country, he was also in regular touch with several people in India through chat apps. The messages he has exchanged with them indicate he was trying to radicalise them, and we are investigating this aspect,” an officer who is part of the investigation said. He said this would be a long process as Ahmed had maintained a low profile in the area. Meanwhile, police have released two of Ahmed’s friends who were staying with him in the flat in Mumbra after questioning them. On Thursday, the ATS had detained Gulfam, with whom he was sharing the flat, and Abrar, who had come to stay with them in April this year. Investigators found that Ahmed had gone out of the city for some days in April and returned with Abrar in the first week of April, the same day that Gulfam’s landlord left on an outstation trip. “Gulfam's landlord used to keep a close watch on him and Ahmed, and the fact that he brought Abrar to stay with him in the landlord's absence is suspicious. The reason behind Abrar's visit is still not clear,” an ATS officer said. Gulfam and Abrar have been instructed to not leave the city and to present themselves for questioning if called.
