Several policemen injured as farmers’ protest turns violent near Kalyan

Photo: Special Arrangement Meanwhile, reports of the protest turning violent were sent out on the police wireless network and manpower from all nearby police stations, as well as Quick Response Teams, were rushed to the spot to quell the protest. Senior officers, including Joint Commissioner of Police Madhukar Pandey, Thane Police, too, have rushed to the spot. The police have taken scores of protesters into custody and are taking further action against them. Officers said that the situation is now under control. The government had recently announced its plan to turn a former airbase, which was built in Newali during the World War II by the British, into an international airport, and local residents, a majority of whom are farmers, have been up in arms against the proposal.
