Thane Police officials said that the protesters, who had gathered on the Haji Malang Road near Kalyan, first started burning tyres and later pelted stones at passing motorists and policemen posted on bandobust at the site of the protest. At least nine policemen were injured in the clashes that ensued. “The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ulhasnagar division and the Senior Police Inspector, Hill Line police station, along with three other officers and four constables sustained injuries. The protesters also set two police vehicles and a private vehicle on fire,” said Thane Police spokesperson Inspector Sukhada Narkar. Photo: Special Arrangement Meanwhile, reports of the protest turning violent were sent out on the police wireless network and manpower from all nearby police stations, as well as Quick Response Teams, were rushed to the spot to quell the protest. Senior officers, including Joint Commissioner of Police Madhukar Pandey, Thane Police, too, have rushed to the spot. The police have taken scores of protesters into custody and are taking further action against them. Officers said that the situation is now under control. The government had recently announced its plan to turn a former airbase, which was built in Newali during the World War II by the British, into an international airport, and local residents, a majority of whom are farmers, have been up in arms against the proposal.
