A stretch of around 50 metres of Zig Zag road in Mumbai's Bandra area caved in on Saturday morning, leaving at least three vehicles and four trees damaged. Heavy rains that lashed the city's western suburb is believed to be the reason behind it. The incident took place at Zig Zag Road, which connects Dr Ambedkar Road and Nargis Dutt Road in Pali Hill, Bandra (West). After the incident, the BMC's disaster management cell and fire department reached the spot to take stock of the situation. Sharad Ughade, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of H West Ward said, "The road was closed for traffic immediately after the incident as a precautionary measure, and the traffic has been diverted." He added that an alternate route for traffic is available. Ughade said that the retaining wall, that was built several years ago to support the road, collapsed. "We will know the exact reason only after an inquiry," he said. However, he added, heavy winds might have caused multiple trees, located at the edge of the road, to get uprooted. In the incident, three cars parked alongside the road adjacent to the compound wall of a society were damaged, while four trees also got uprooted. "We had to trim some more trees around the incident site to remove debris," said Ughade. Ughade said that there are a few retaining walls in his ward. He will check the other retaining walls to prevent similar incidents.
