more-in A 53-year-old train attendant was arrested on charges of causing nuisance and not molestation after he allegedly molested a sleeping 11-year-old passenger on the Golden Temple train on Tuesday at 4.30 a.m. The incident took place between Baroda and Surat stations. The victim is a Class 6 student and the daughter of a loco pilot who stays in Vasai Road Railway Colony. The complaint was registered by the girl’s mother, Munni Devi, who was travelling with her two daughters in coach HA1. She filed a complaint with the ticket checking staff but refused to file an FIR owing to the lengthy procedure. According to the Borivali Government Railway Police, said the mother arrived at the police station to register the complaint with her two daughters and was accompanied by a neighbour, the Railway Protection Force and a train superintendent. A RPF staff from Borivali said, “The motorman was not present at the time of registering the complaint and neither was he at the police station. One of their neighbours, also a motorman, accompanied them.” The RPF officer said, the family was on their way to Mumbai from Rajasthan, when Heeralal Gangadin Gupta allegedly tried to molest the girl. At around 1 a.m., she felt someone touching her inappropriately. A relative, who wanted to remain anonymous, said, “She was scared and later complained to her mother about the misbehaviour. The elder daughter who is in the final year of graduation immediately called the RPF helpline and asked for help. Though the RPF staff arrived at Borivali station, the family was advised by railway officials and friends that registering a complaint would make life hell for them.” The officer said, “The mother made sure a memo was issued to the attendant and dragged him to the Borivali railway police. However, when the mother refused to file an official complaint, the railway police let off the attendant with a warning. The attendant is a resident of Tardeo and has been employed on a contractual basis.” As the Railway Protection Force received a complaint on their helpline number, they registered a case of nuisance against the attendant under Section 145 (b) and 146 of the Railway Act. An RPF officer said, “We tried our best to make sure she registered a case. Such culprits should not be left free. But she didn’t agree to register a molestation complaint.” The accused was produced before a court in Andheri, where he was fined ?600. Senior RPF officials have refused to provide further details on the case. Anup Kumar Shukla, senior divisional security commissioner, RPF, Western Railways, did not respond to messages and calls made by The Hindu.
