Two `Govindas` dead; over; 117 injured in dahi-handi celebrations in Mumbai

The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with great enthusiasm across Maharashtra whereas per custom and tradition group of people called `Govindas` climb human multi-tier-pyramids to break `handi` or earthen pots filled with curd, butter tied at a height. Every year some tragedy takes place. These groups or `mandals` travel from one venue to the other and break the handi. Two `Govindas` have died during the Dahi Handi at Palghar district and Airoli in Navi Mumbai respectively.

Every year some tragedy takes place. These groups or `mandals` travel from one venue to the other and break the handi. Two `Govindas` have died during the Dahi Handi at Palghar district and Airoli in Navi Mumbai respectively. The deceased in Palghar has been identified as Rohan Kini, he had suffered an epileptic attack after descending the pyramid and died while being taken to a hospital. While the other Jayesh, died as he came in contact with a live wire. Over 117 Govindas are undergoing treatment after they have received injuries during the dahi-handi in other parts of the city.  The festival, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna, was celebrated with enthusiasm across the city, including in areas like Ghatkopar, Dadar, Lalbaug and Bhandup. Organisers of dahi handi competitions, however, said this year the celebrations were relatively low-key in view of the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), income tax woes and demonetisation.
